At Sequoia Signs & Graphics, we love wall murals and we are not afraid to try new products. Those two considerations recently combined to make a fun new project.
(By the way- I try not to make these blogs personal, but there is no getting around it when I tell you this story.)
Our daughter, Kipling, turned 11 this past November and her birthday wish was to have a full room remodel with a forest scene on one wall and a chalkboard on the other. This was her idea- not ours! It involved removal of built-in desk, replacing some carpet and baseboard and a few other things, but the most fun was working on the wall mural.
We have done a bunch of murals with good success but most of them had been done with self-adhesive vinyl. In this case, since we had to strip the old paint off the wall, we thought we would try a different approach. HP produces a product called PVC-free Wallpaper which is essentially wallpaper that we can print on.
We found a great photo of the interior of a forest that immediately got our 11 year old’s approval. From there, we created ‘tiles’ so that we could apply the paper easily with ½” overlaps. After that, it was just a matter of printing and trimming the paper before we took it home to apply.
The application process is fairly simple and possibly easier than self-adhesive vinyl. We soaked the graphic in water and then “booked” it against itself like wallpaper. From there it was just hang, align and squeegee out the excess fluid. In hindsight, we should have taken some photos during the process to share.
It was great fun and our daughter was thrilled. Beyond that, we added a new weapon in our sign-making arsenal. In fact, we are using the same product with a new client this month.
At Sequoia Signs & Graphics, we are never content to stick with what we know and are always researching new products. If you have a job that you can’t figure out, give us a call! We would love to meet with you, understand the problem and help to solve it.
Our last shot was an attempted panoramic….
