Concord, CA Business Sign CompanyA 2012 FedEx survey titled “What’s Your Sign?” found that almost eight in 10 (76 percent) American consumers would enter a store they have never visited before based on its signs, and nearly seven in 10 (68 percent) have actually purchased a product or service because a sign caught their eye. On the other hand, 60 percent of consumers say they wouldn’t enter a small business if it had no signs whatsoever to identify it.

But deciding what signage to use and where it should be placed can be a challenge for business owners who lack experience designing, ordering, and installing their own signs.

Fortunately, Sequoia Signs & Graphics can help. Serving clients throughout the greater Bay Area from our Walnut Creek / Pleasant Hill headquarters, we provide high quality graphic design services, sign auditing, and professional manufacture of a diverse variety of business signs to meet your needs.

Color and Contrast

People are incredibly visual creatures, and that makes your sign’s visual ‘first impression’ of primary importance when it comes to designing an effective business sign. Choose strong, simple primary colors like red, blue, green for your primary color, and a secondary color that provides strong visual contrast (Red/Black or Blue/Yellow or Navy/Baby Blue, for instance).

Keep in mind that different colors have been demonstrated to trigger different psychological reactions and be prepared to make changes to your design if feedback from your original color scheme is off.

Text

While the right font can say as much about your business as a logo (soft, bold, slender, curvy, etc…) it is vital that your prioritize readability above all. Fonts should be clearly contrasted for visibility (white font on black background / black font on white background) and should be uncomplicated and legible at a distance.

Branding is a huge topic and one too deep for us to go into here, but if your company features a symbol or logo it should also be included in your business signage in order to aid your branding and provide continuity for customers who might also view print advertisements or your webpage. Consistency will help customers draw connections between your different spaces.

Use your logo’s color to complement and accent your text, never to overpower it. The viewer’s eye should first fall on the graphic, and then navigate around to the beginning of the text. Therefore, place your logo in the upper right, top, or bottom of the sign depending on which space is most visually primary.
