Dimensional Letter Signs are a term used to describe a sign that is made by assembling three dimensional material raised from the background surface. These are typically a collection of letters, logos, graphics or phrases that, then displayed together, create a complete sign.
As you may have guessed, dimensional letter signs have a raised, three-dimensional appearance and are typically made from metal, aluminum or acrylic. They extend beyond the surface of the wall or building facade to create a distinctive shape and presence.
Dimensional lettering is one of the most versatile and effective signage options, and frequently used for business lobby signs, office reception signs, and retailer and commercial spaces. Whether your signage needs are exterior or interior, dimensional lettering offers a professional, sturdy and timeless appearance.
Materials Used in Dimensional Letter Signs
Acrylic is very affordable sign material and will hold up well to outside elements and temperature fluctuations. It comes in many colors, and can be cut, shaped and formed into different size signs for different needs. Acrylic is the most common type of plastic dimensional letter signs and can even be made to look like other materials at a fraction of the cost.
Sign manufacturers often turn to aluminum because it is a durable lightweight material. Aluminum is strong, does not rust, and offers an affordable material solution that can be used for numerous sign types and needs. It offers flexibility for design and style and will hold up well over time.
PVC / Dimensional Plastic
Similar to acrylic, painted dimensional plastic PVC letters are a very common form of dimensional letters use for exterior signage. It is tough and durable so it stands up to weather. PVC letters will range in thickness from 1/8” to 1” thick. While PVC comes in many base colors, unlike acrylic, it can be painted virtually any color and finish.
A dimensional letter sign made of metal are most often made of light gauge steel, aluminum, copper, brass or stainless steel. These materials are very strong and durable, so they’re great for the outside of your business. Metal dimensional letters can also create a very modern, polished and professional feel for your business lobby or reception signs.
Rigid Foam / High Density Urethane
Rigid polyurethane high-density foam is versatile, strong and durable. High density urethane (HDU)/ polyurethane foam board is commonly used in outdoor dimensional signage for carved or routed signs, usually as a substitute for wood. As with PVC, rigid foams are “closed cell” and do not absorb water.
Wood is a classic material that can be used in a ton of different ways. It can be used to create dimensional letter signs that range from rustic to modern and everything in between. It holds up well for exterior uses as long as the wood has been treated, or you can utilize wood for interior office signs, and it will last decades.

Halo lit signs are also called backlit signs or illuminated LED signs. Each element of the sign is individually lit with LED lights. The lights create a “halo effect” casting a glow around each letter or element of the sign.

Materials and Use Cases for Halo Lit Lobby Signs
Interior halo lit signs are commonly made of aluminum, acrylic or stainless steel. Each letter or sign element is individually manufactured and lit with LED lights. The low-voltage LED lights are typically white, but you can select from a range of colored lights to complement your brand.
Jewelers, hotels and spas often use halo lit signs to feature their business and brand. However, halo lit lobby signs are not limited to high-end retailers! Considerations for Halo Light Lobby Signs
A power source is requires to light halo lit signage. Ideally, an electrical junction will be located behind the wall or in the ceiling directly above the sign to power the lights. Or you can use an outlet hidden behind the sign for the most effective display of your brand. As an electrical sign contractor, Sequoia Signs can install your halo lit sign to meet the necessary code requirements.
Color and Contrast
Halo lit signs illuminate around the edges of the letters. A detailed logo with many small elements or a multi-colored logo may not have enough contrast with the lights for the desired 3-D halo effect. Our design team loves a challenge and can recommend additional face lighting to showcase the intricacies of the brand. Interior halo lit signs have the most dramatic effect when there is contrast against the back surface.
A flat, smooth surface is optimal to evenly reflect the light. This provides balance and even distribution of the halo lit effect. If your backdrop is uneven, ask our design team about solutions such as a backer panel behind the letters.

Dimensional Lobby Sign for Winebow
Recently we worked together with Winebow at their location in Benicia, CA. Winebow is a national importer and distributor of fine wines and spirits. Winebow has recently celebrated their 40 year anniversary, having locations all over the United States. At Sequoia Signs & Graphics we worked together with Winebow on a brand new lobby sign for their location in Benicia.
The end result of their lobby sign is a combination of a dimensional sign with a wall wrap. Their dimensional lobby sign is a custom sign made out of acrylic, painted in metallic silver for an elegant touch. Spacers were used to for the dimensional letters to create a floating effect off the wall. The dimensional letters are installed on top of a wall wrap. The wall wrap creates an extra dimensional element to the lobby sign display. Showcasing a beautiful picture of a vineyard emphasizes the overall branding of Winebow.
Different types of Sign materials
Acrylic is the most common material used for indoor Lobby & Reception Signs. It’s a very versatile material that can be used for cut out letters, as well as a back panel. In addition to the flexibility in shape it also gives flexibility in color. Acrylic comes in many different colors, as well as clear. So depending on your branding colors you might be able to use a colored acrylic. However acrylic can also easily be painted, resulting into endless possibilities in terms of design. In addition to painting acrylic a custom color, you can also apply a laminate. With a laminate you can create some very special effects like brushed aluminum, polished gold, or even wood grain. The main advantage of using a laminate on top of acrylic is the cost. A laminate is more cost effective then a solid brushed aluminum letter or wood.
Apart from acrylic there are some other common materials used for Lobby Signs. A cost effective option is PVC. This is more cost effective then acrylic because it has a slightly rougher finishing. However this can still be a great option, especially if you are looking at thicker dimensional letters, making it more cost effective then acrylic.
Routed aluminum letters can also be used for a lobby sign. This is a more expensive option though and often considered overkill for interior usage. An acrylic dimensional letter with a brushed laminate will create the same look and will hold up well over time indoor.

We had the pleasure of working with Dettaglio Construction (DCI) on a recently completed exterior signage project for1716 Lofts entrance signs in Walnut Creek. DCI Construction is a Walnut Creek-based construction company that truly cares about delivering excellence down to the last detail. Dettaglio is an Italian word that translates to “the art of detail” and this theme is truly seen throughout their work. This characteristic also made them a perfect fit for Sequoia Signs because we share a love for detail.
DCI approached us with a fairly tight timeline so we really had to jump into this project quickly! Our first step with DCI was to meet with the architect and lead management to understand the scope and theme of this exterior signage project. While some try to move quickly past this step, we feel it is essential that we are on the same page. This ensures that there is consistency throughout the entire project and allows us to offer options for future signage needs.
The signs at the building entrance were the highest priority; as the saying goes, “you only get one chance to make a first impression.” The plans involved an address sign on the awning and a halo-illuminated sign in the entrance lobby. Both of the signs added a degree of luxury to the project, and combined, they really set the tone that this is a great place to live.
The awning sign consists of individually formed polished exterior aluminum letters that are mounted to a base plate. Installation was tricky because the base plate needed to be welded to the awning, but the heat from this process could have potentially damaged the letters. Our solution was to assemble the sign such that the exterior letters could be removed during the welding and reattached after – this worked perfectly.
Just inside the entry is the beautifullobby signthat required some careful planning by Sequoia Signs. It was initially mounted on a wood cladding, but the lobby design changed, and we needed to mount the sign directly to the finished cement wall. In addition to maximum penetration requirements, we also had to be careful to run the wiring in such a way that the casual observer does not see them. Because of our precision, the end product came out terrific!
We enjoyed working with DCI for their exterior and lobby signage and, in particular, appreciate their attention to every detail. The next time you are in Walnut Creek on North Main Street, look for the 1716 Lofts sign!
Our goal at Sequoia Signs is to make only the highest quality signs, with the highest quality materials, on the best equipment in the industry. Above all, impeccable customer service is our #1 priority.
